What Makes Halo's Music Iconic?
With the official release of Halo Infinite just around the corner, I revisit the music of Halo: Combat Evolved (and a few ideas from the 2nd and 3rd installments of the series), and discuss how one decision - to write a plainchant melody for the Main Theme - affected the entire soundtrack, and our perception of the game.

    07:53 I just found this video yesterday. This is a nitpicky ghost-discussion. There is no politisation of musical taste required. If i like and enjoy a musical composition or interpretation, the gender or race of the writer/performer doesnt matter. I can listen to Beethoven or Clara Schumann as well as to Scott Joplin, Aretha Franklin or Anne-Sophie Mutter. An idelogical recontextualiztion of listening preferences will not solve any percieved disadvantage. What should that even look like - I have to listen to 10 gender/race-diverse pianists before I am ideologically allowed to listen to Glenn Gould, if ever? Such a method will lead to exclusion of music or performers, based on purely political and arbitrary pseudo-criteria. This is very dangerous. This sounds very much like Chinese culture revolution or the Nazi-term "Enartete Kunst" - ideologically inappropriate works are censored or forbidden and their authors/performers will be subjected to harassment, persecution, imprisonment or worse. Do you know how brainwashed you sound?

    i'm not among the edgelord right-wingers spouting racist bullshit in the comments but your arguments are sort of one-dimensional. no ones denying that classical musics rooted in colonialist/imperialist history, but neglecting the fact that classical music as a wholes dying for reasons that have nothing 2 do with race or that imperialist history is a fools errand. also your advice just makes supporting marginalized artists a chore to do rather than something thats rewarding n fun. as a autistic trans woman i don't want 2 fucking track how much music i'm listening 2 is by poc, how many composers i listen 2 that are in the realm ov dead white man composers.

    I’m finding this much after it’s upload date but I appreciate the perspectives you are bringing to this! As a gigging percussionist/engineer/composer, I find myself at a weird intersection of this all the time as a Middle Eastern/South Asian person existing in music spaces. While I can’t always speak on the experiences of other POC, i appreciate the parallels we all experience navigating this career path

    Anyone who thinks that classical music is racist has a head that is made almost completely out of meat. By the way, I'm sure that Jay-Z And other pop stars and rap artists are gonna give back all the money earned using classical string riffs all throughout this music, among other classical tropes. I really miss Americans worrying about shit that makes sense to worry about & that actually matters.

    Apple did NOT control Bungie. They were and are a totally separate company - they just primarily released their games for the Mac (Pathways Into Darkness, and two of the three Marathon titles - Marathon II and Myth were released on Windows as well). Like many companies that had really good Mac implementations (or were Mac-only) they were featured on-stage at Macworld and WWDC.

    What is kinda funny to me is when Americans debate whether classical music is racist or not despite the lack of properly understanding it like Europeans do. I know Americans have adopted the classical as a term to label their movie and theater scores. Many classical music pieces have inspired movie score titles. And I love lots of those. But I would never consider those scores as part of what is called classical music. And on top of that I can easily replace any movie score title with something from Mahler, Wagner, Shostakovich, Brahms etc. without blinking once. Most scores by Danny Elfman can be replaced with anything written by Mahler. John Williams music? Wagner. Wagner's Ring cycle still blows your typical score out of the waters. Gatekeeping is still a meaningful tool to keep the completely uninitiated out of it and prevent them from talking nonsense inside the circles. Otherwise appropriation is non existing in regards to classical musichence everyone can get an instrument and start playing. That's what happened in the past. People listened, took a sheet and started to play the piece at home. Today this is similar with music by Philip Glass. This man, a great modern composer and conductor who still lives, has his music copied and replayed by others many times already with other musicians pumping out their recordings while Mr. Glass still produces his next tunes.

    Alpha vs Beta, Either Berdahl with his limited knowledge is quoting scientists from NCBI and scienceDirect who do not make sense , or O'Dell with your degree in music and your personal opinions do not make sense! So far you are the less convincing!

    Adam you stated that you have the credentials to rebuke Berdahl presentation, but you have failed in your attempt because you seems not to have any coherent understanding of his presentation or even of the topic that you addressed. For example, on the Alpha versus Beta you claimed that "really the beta that he's sort of going for is actually triggered more by syncopated music..."

    • @AdamODell
      @AdamODell 8 місяців тому

      Not sure how that’s a failed argument, unless you didn’t finish the comment? Berdahl is arguing that beta brainwave activity is a good thing, and that syncopated music is bad because it doesn’t inspire beta brainwave activity, but syncopated music inspires greater beta brainwave function than “unsyncopated” music. So he’s either misunderstanding beta brainwave activity, misunderstanding syncopation, misunderstanding both, or he’s being intentionally misleading.

    It's not that deep. Its suppose to be a sauber mellancolic and serious note to denote the underlying gravity of the main plot. Then the rock music starts which is the start of the military music you could imagine soldiers listen to to prepare for battle. This is also put in the perspective of a hero journey and 117 is the hero kind of. This typ of first serious then action is used by literally every composer out there. The idea that it's iconic is due to the fact that it's good, but mainly to be honest it's because of the franchise success overall.
